History

The Department of Geography at Kuwait University has a rich legacy dating back to October 1966, when it was founded as one of the university’s original academic departments. Initially part of the College of Sciences, Arts, and Education, the department quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the university’s educational and research efforts.

In 1980, the department became part of the College of Arts following the establishment of the independent College of Education. A significant milestone in its journey came in the academic year 1998-1999, when the Department of Geography became an integral part of the newly formed College of Social Sciences. This transition marked an essential step in broadening its interdisciplinary focus and aligning its programs with societal needs.

The department’s commitment to advancing geographic knowledge was evident early on, with the creation of a research and translation unit in cooperation with the Kuwaiti Geographical Society in 1978. This initiative was pivotal in publishing localized and global geographic research, fostering academic exchange, and enriching regional geographic studies.

Over the years, the Department of Geography has grown into a dynamic and forward-looking institution recognized for its contributions to education, research, and community service. From its origins to its present achievements, the department continues to shape the future of geographic scholarship and its application to real-world challenges.
